Adapting to Change: Embracing Video Training Beyond EUC

So I had to make a few changes. Most notably was when I received a recent bill for my website (it was a bit of sticker shock). I’ve been really bad about posting, and it was hard to justify that high of a blogging fee.

Consequently, I found a new home for the blog (now at WordPress.com itself) and far cheaper. At least for now. It does limit the toys I can add to the site but doesn’t limit video. That’s the biggest and most important part.

For about 18+ years, I was mainly a technical trainer at VMware, specializing in EUC (largely Horizon, Horizon Cloud, App Volumes, DEM, etc.). In May 2023, I took on a new role: Staff Technical Learning Engineer. Fancy title for video trainer (primarily). The challenge was that it wasn’t going to include EUC (originally, there was some thought that it would stay but… as is well known now, Omnissa, formerly VMware EUC, is about to become independent of VMware by Broadcom). So what am I focusing on now?

Whole bunch of new stuff (or not so new to others but new to me): vCloud Director (this wasn’t too much of a leap since Horizon Cloud and Horizon had many of the same concepts); vSphere with Tanzu/TKG; VMC on AWS and whatever else tickles my fancy (currently, the tickling is being done by AI).

While I miss the comfort of what I knew, the adventure of learning something new definitely appeals as long as I can find places to break it down and build it back up again. I suppose that will be the bigger challenge. It’s not impossible but somewhat challenging. The idea of building a home lab to do plunge myself further into would be great but the costs, noise (that can be a challenge when doing video recordings and sound being a sensitive thing), and, well…the cost.

Wait.

I said that already. I think in the meantime I’ll be poking a fair amount using this neat technology called virtualization and Cloud Director. There is an appeal to building from scratch everything but sometimes… just better doing with what you have for now.

So what will this new blog cover? Basically, anything that I think has relevance or importance or is just plain neat. Probably the most important thing is to get back into the habit and joy of learning (and sharing that learning).
