Taking Time to Upskill in Today’s Job Market

Job hunting has transformed dramatically since my early career days. Back then, the formula was simple: prepare multiple resumes, visit the library for free training, and network through local business associations. Government-sponsored retraining programs were readily available (and still are, though often underutilized). These resources were typically free or low-cost, targeting newcomers to the job market or career-changers.

Fast forward to today, and the landscape of learning has exploded. Online platforms offer countless opportunities to upskill: from YouTube’s vast library of tutorials to structured learning environments like Udemy, SkillShare, PluralSight, and Coursera. While many of these follow traditional “Talking Head” education styles, my personal technical expertise comes from what I call the school of Break-N-Fix (or in some memorable cases, Break-N-Set-On-Fire, which I managed to do twice to the same computer!).

n today’s digital age, maintaining a professional presence (what we used to call a “brand”) has become crucial. I’m focusing on building this presence across various platforms – reviving this blog, becoming more active on LinkedIn, and exploring emerging platforms like BlueSky. YouTube is next on my list.

Speaking of YouTube, it presents unique challenges, as does blogging. Initially, I created both platforms to share technical information, particularly about End-User Computing. However, most technical content requires a home lab – a project I’ve temporarily shelved until I secure a new position where I can align my lab with specific technologies or leverage cloud environments (or find affordable Hands-On Labs).

However, upskilling isn’t solely about technical prowess. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023 emphasizes that soft skills are increasingly crucial for professional success. Their data shows organizations prioritizing these competencies more than ever (as shown in the chart – lighter blue indicates increasing importance; purple shows decreasing importance).

To practice what I preach, I challenged myself to create a video about upskilling. Though the final product runs under 10 minutes, mastering Adobe Premiere took nearly a full day. Through this project, I learned to:

  • Split video segments
  • Add audio tracks
  • Create a talking head circle (positioned in the bottom right!)
  • Design animated lists
  • Insert static and animated images
  • Fade out music
  • Create dissolve transitions between video tracks

I discovered numerous free resources, including audio clips and Premiere templates. While I’m pleased with the video’s quality, there’s room for more in-depth coverage (perhaps this calls for a series?). Regardless of its reception, it’s a solid starting point, and I plan to create more content weekly, including technical topics.

I welcome your feedback – the good, the bad, and the ugly!
